Why Tom Cruise Still Matters in the Film Industry (Analysis)

This story first appeared in the Oct. 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter . Tom Cruise would make a great Survivor contestant. Despite his peculiar public image and less-than-stellar domestic box office in recent years, the 49-year-old has three other big studio movies hitting theaters in the next 18 months in addition to Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol : The now-filming One Shot for Paramount, June's Rock of Ages for New Line and the untitled Joseph Kosinski sci-fi epic for Universal. Also, THR has learned that Warner Bros. is talking to the actor for the lead in its big-budget sci-fi war pic We Mortals Are (aka All You Need Is Kill ), being directed by Doug Liman . There's no doubt that the December success of Ghost Protocol helps Cruise's cause. The film has earned north of $270 million in just two weeks, and Paramount estimates it will ulitmately gross $600 million worldwide--a franchise best. Damon pretty much had his pick of directors, and in the years that followed, he made good on that capital. He reunited with Steven Soderbergh and Paul Greengrass, this time in less commercial films, and also did turns with Clint Eastwood, the Coen Bros. and Cameron Crowe. After all those prestige bids, it's not a stretch to say that Damon has solidified his place as one of the best actors in his peer group. But even his most ardent supporters would have trouble saying he's a commercial draw. A-listers take nondescript movies and elevate them into hits. Damon seems to forever be stuck in a middling midrange. If that. Many of his movies over the past four years ha

Little Suri Cruise may be the envy of children worldwide when her Christmas wish for US$130,000 (S$170,000) worth of presents was fulfilled by her parents, celebrity Hollywood couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. US gossip magazine Us Weekly said that Suri's Christmas list is chock full of super-luxe gifts. Two of the five-year-old's most expensive requests were for a pair of US$15,000 diamond earrings and gowns costing US$1,500 to "make her look like a princess", reported Australia's Daily Telegraph. But they were dwarfed by her request for a pony costing US$100,000. Cruise has already found a stable for the horse in upscale Beverly Hills, reported In Touch Weekly. Cruise swapped childcare tips with Pegg

Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg shared tips for changing nappies on the set of 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'. The British actor has a two-year-old daughter Matilda with his wife Maureen, while the Hollywood superstar has three children, five-year-old Suri, his daughter with wife Katie Holmes, and Isabella, 19, and 16-year-old Connor, his kids whom he adopted with his ex-spouse Nicole Kidman. Tom Cruise has splashed out $5,000 to rent an ice skating rink for his daughter. The Hollywood actor and wife Katie Holmes reportedly hired out the VIP-style Igloo warm-up area at New York's Rockefeller Center for the whole winter season in order for five-year-old Suri to hone her skating skills. In Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise's super spy Ethan Hunt scampers up the facade of the Burj Khalifa, the needle-like structure that punctures the clouds high above Dubai. Audiences have been delighted by Cruise's stunts, which he performed himself the A-lister swings from a high point on the 240-story structure, the tallest building in the world, and even kicks in a few windows. But as cinematic symbols go, the Burj is an oddity. Most action sequences set astride modern skyscrapers happen considerably west of here. Superman flew up the Eiffel Tower. Godzilla palmed the Empire State Building. And in Independence Day, aliens blew up the U.S. Bank Tower. The Burj is trying to, well, top them all. Opened only last year, the 2,717-foot-tall building was designed by the American architect behind Chicago's Trump Tower and is named after Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a ruler of neighboring Abu Dhabi who supported the project.
