'The Odds' actor takes Tom Cruise comparisons in stride

Date: Wednesday Feb. 29, 2012 1:19 PM ET TORONTO Ongoing comparisons to a young Tom Cruise are "not the end of the world," says 24-year-old Tyler Johnston, whose uncanny similarities to the veteran action star have dogged him for years. And so the B.C.-bred actor has prepared himself for the strong likelihood that analogies will only intensify with the debut of his Vancouver-set gambling thriller "The Odds." "People keep saying that and it's very flattering," Johnston said at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, when the feature premiered. "I mean, he's a great actor who's had a great career and done some great movies and produced some great movies. So it's not the end of the world." "And I do see it sometimes myself, actually. When I watch myself I see little glimpses of Tom Cruise. I'm OK with that." The resemblance is not obvious in face-to-face encounters with the slim, baby-faced Johnston, a

Paramount Pictures Tom Cruise, shown in 2000's cliffhanger of a movie, "Mission Impossible II." Q: Books are being "blown to bits." By whom and why? A: That's bits as in bits and bytes, as archived books are being digitized by the millions, in at least seven languages -- Chinese, English, French, German, Hebrew, Russian and Spanish -- and going back to the year 1520, says Brian Hayes in "American Scientist" magazine. Critics worry about this, as do sentimentalists who say "it's just not the same curling up by the fireside with a good Kindle." But, Hayes insists, books are not just for reading: We (and our computers) can count, sort and classify words, uncover patterns of language usage and more. For example, looking at regular and irregular verbs, the Google Books project, by Harvard and Google, found that between 1800 and 2000, six verbs went from irregular to regular, now forming the past tense with "ed" (burn, chide, sm

Whoa. Tom Cruise was nearly John Carter of Mars in the '80s?

As fans likely know, the upcoming John Carter film wasn't the first attempt to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs' beloved Barsoom book series to the big screen. Before Disney finally got this version off the ground, everyone from Robert Rodriguez to George R.R. Martin had taken a shot at the property over the years . But guess who else was in the mix a few decades ago? In an interview with Slashfilm , producer Jim Morris spilled some details on an aborted late-'80s effort that would have starred Tom Cruise, with Die Hard director John McTiernan in the director's chair. "I was at ILM at the time when I did it and we were trying to do it. I mention that because, at the time, we were kind of scratching our heads," Morris said. "They came in with this script that had Tharksand it was very different from our scriptbut had all of the same characters and so forth." So what went wrong? The filmmakers were smart enough to realize that computer graphics hadn't

Trivia: Tom Cruise Could Have Been John Carter

Image
Posted on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 by Germain Lussier John Carter s journey to the big screen is, quite possibly, even more interesting than the actual journey the character takes in the story. And thats saying something when youre talking about a Civil War hero transported to Mars to fight with nine-foot-tall aliens. The property has gone though dozens of different versions with various stars, filmmakers and even studios hellbent on adapting the influential Edgar Rice Burroughs property for the big screen.Consequently, because it took so long, films that draw heavily on the material, like Star Wars, Blade Runner and Avatar, are all considered to be slightly more innovative than they actually are. (I said slightly!) And while its fairly well-documented that filmmakers such as Jon Favreau, Guillermo Del Toro and Robert Rodriguez all tried to tackle John Carter at one point, a pairing that isnt so well-known is Die Hard director John McTiernan and star Tom Cruise . Yup. They we

Tropic spin-off still in the works

Tom Cruise is still on course to play his Tropic Thunder character in a spin-off movie, the films writer has confirmed. The Hollywood A-lister starred as hip-hop dancing studio boss Les Grossman in the 2008 movie and in 2010 it was reported that he would reprise the attention-grabbing role for a new film. Since then, little has been heard about the project, but screenwriter Michael Bacall has now told Collider that plans are under way. He said: Its actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr Cruise and Mr (Ben) Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so Im hopeful that thatll get up and running soon. Bacall suggested that the Mission Impossible stars schedule will affect the timing of the eagerly anticipated project. Paramount has the draft and I gather that theyre pretty happy with it. I think Tom Cruise probably has a lot of stuff on his plate right now and I think itll

Tom Cruise denies being 'gay' !

Cuba Gooding Jr banned his father from a film set for asking Tom Cruise if he was "gay". The 44-year-old actor worked with Cruise on the huge Hollywood hit movie 'Jerry McGuire'. "He gave Tom a hug and said, 'I love you man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?" the Mirror quoted Gooding as saying on 'The Graham Norton show'. "I almost fainted. And thought, please lord let me disappear. Tom just laughed and said 'no'," he added. On the huge success of 'Jerry McGuire' and the famous line "show me the money", Gooding admitted he is still known for that catchphrase more than anything, even though the film was first released in 1996.

Ryan Reynolds - Ryan Reynolds Beats Tom Cruise In Top Gear Challenge

Ryan Reynolds is Hollywood's new top gun after beating Tom Cruise's lap time during a racetrack challenge for British TV show Top Gear. The Proposal star got behind the wheel of a Kia hatchback for the show's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment, which aired in the U.K. on Sunday (12Feb12), and admitted the challenge was frustrating for him because he prefers to ride motorcycles. Footage of his lap had to be bleeped considerably because he hurled obscenities throughout his drive. He told host Jeremy Clarkson, "I'd like to think I'm a horrible driver. I ride motorcycles everywhere, so you can just race up through traffic... When oncoming traffic is all stopped, you can just go right up the middle. So I have this tendency when I am in a vehicle to think I can slip that entire vehicle right up the middle. It's only at the last second where I'm hitting the breaks, coming to a halt (that I remember I'm in a car)." Clarkson then told Reynolds his
