Hicks: Tom Cruise starring in 'Magnificent Seven' remake, reports say
Just stop with the remakes already.
Variety reported Tuesday that Tom Cruise is set to star in a new version of "The Magnificent Seven."
Someone needs to make a new law stating the following: "No remake shall be made of a film that can't be improved. Now stop being lazy, spit out the organic egg white omelet, and think up some new ideas."
The film would be the latest in a long line of remakes in the works at MGM, with versions of "Carrie," "Poltergeist" and "RoboCop" all at various stages in the production process.
Cruise is apparently a big fan "The Magnificent Seven." The original film (itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai") tells the story of a group of gunslingers hired by a village of Mexican peasants to run off a marauding gang of banditos. Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen headed up the all-star cast.
Now, unless you can get some of those guys cloned and back on board, this just doesn't sound like such a swell idea.
No word as yet on a release date or further casting. Tune in tomorrow, when Cruise decides to climb into a dolphin suit for a remake of "Flipper."
