Tom Cruise is in early talks to replace George Clooney in a big-screen reboot of the 1960s spy series "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," according to Deadline.com.

Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes") is on board to direct.

The original 1964-68 series followed the adventures of spies Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin (played by Robert Vaughan and David McCallum, respectively) who, as members of the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, used their charm, wit and a steady stream of gadgets to thwart the evil organization known as THRUSH.

(Hitfix.com has more on the history of the series, including the brouhaha over contributions by James Bond creator Ian Fleming.)

As late as 2011, Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct Clooney in the feature film. But Clooney left the project! -- for health reasons, according to Deadline -- and Soderbergh followed. Enter Richie.

"U.N.C.L.E." would be yet another franchise for Cruise, whose "Mission: Impossible" is getting a fifth film and "Jack Reacher" character is getting a second, Deadline said.

Cruise can next be seen in the sci-fi film "Oblivion," opening April 19.
