Tom Cruise Enters 'Oblivion' In New Set Photos

Somehow we figured the first set photos of "Oblivion" would be a bit more, well, desolate.

But the images from the movie's set that ComingSoon.net have posted show a friendly, pre-apocalypse looking world. Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko can be seen shooting scenes in front of the Empire State Building, though it's unclear in the above picture if Cruise is gazing at the tall structure or something else in the sky.

We also can see shots of Cruise and Kurylenko holding hands in some of the set photos. It seems like there is a romance brewing between these two actors' characters, though we don't think the scenes being shot in New York City take place during the film's present day.

Considering the fact "Oblivion" is set after Earth is destroyed, we'd have to guess that these set photos don't give us a good sense of how the rest of the movie will look. Maybe these are set in a flashback or a dream, or maybe they work in the flick in some other way. Still, it's exciting to see proof that filming is actually underway, since we've been waiting for "Oblivion" to head into development for a while.

The plot synopsis for "Oblivion" says it is set in the future where radiation has destroyed the Earth. Most of the population is safe from the danger of the irradiated world and the dangerous Scavenger alien race by living in t! he cloud s, but some people are forced to live on the Earth's surface. Jak (Cruise) is one such man, a surface drone repairman whose life gets turned upside down when he finds a mysterious woman (Andrea Riseborough) in a crash-landed pod. She tells him she's on a science experiment that was started 60 years earlier, yet somehow still knows who he is. This "sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows."

"Oblivion" is due in theaters on April 26, 2013.
