Cruise beats Craig at box office

Tom Cruise's latest movie, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, has beaten Daniel Craig's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to the top of the UK box office.

Cruise's film, the fourth instalment in the Mission: Impossible series, took 8.1m in its opening weekend.

David Fincher's remake of the Swedish thriller, which stars Craig as a journalist investigating a young girl's disappearance, took 4.3m.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows was third with takings of 2.5m.

Arthur Christmas, last week's number one, fell to number seven.

The festive movie is the fourth animated film to feature in the top 10 this week.

At number four was Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, followed by Puss In Boots in fifth place.

The latter features the voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek and is a prequel to the Shrek film series.

The fourth animated film in this week's chart was Happy Feet Two in ninth position.

This week's number six was the critically panned New Year's Eve, featuring an all-star cast including Robert De Niro, Halle Berry and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Martin Scorsese's movie Hugo, wh! ich is b ased on Brian Selznick's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, took eighth position.

The 3D adventure film has recently won several critics' awards and picked up three Golden Globe award nominations.

Indian action film Don 2 rounded off the top 10.
