Hicks: Tom Cruise to star in 'Van Helsing' reboot

Tom Cruise will help reboot "Van Helsing."

Universal announced this week that Cruise will play the title role of a vampire hunter in Transylvania originally played in a 2004 release by Hugh Jackman. The film was panned by critics but cruised to a $300 million payday at the box office.

This time around, to ensure that Cruise's incarnation fares better than Jackman's (at least critically), the project is bringing in some big guns.

The reboot came about as a result of a two-year production deal Universal signed with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writing team responsible for the upcoming "Star Trek 2," as well as "Transformers" and "Mission Impossible: III," which

starred Cruise.

In other words, when his thetans act up and the furniture jumping starts, they won't bat an eye.

The pair was recently brought in by Sony to give a once-over to the script for the sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man."

It's probably safe to say these guys have spent some time in their moms' basements.
