Tom Cruise to star in remake of classic Western The Magnificent Seven

Tom Cruise is in line to star in MGMs remake of the 1960 western The Magnificent Seven.

Variety reports that MGM has added the film to a list of upcoming remakes that includes Robocop and Carrie.

The 1960 version of The Magnificent Seven was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai and starred well-known leading actors like Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner.

According to IMDB, the film's plot centers on a small Mexican village that is repeatedly attacked by bandits. To address the problem village elders send three farmers to the United States to recruit help. The farmers return with seven gunmen.

The Tom Cruise remake of the film is still in its early stages, and MGM is currently searching for a writer.

The Guardian notes that Cruise has several films lined up before The Magnificent Seven, including the upcoming summer film Rock of Ages, where he will play an aging rocker.

He will also star in Christopher McQuarrie's One Shot, an adaptation of Lee Childs book of the same name.
