Tom Cruise latest victim of 'swatting' hoax

Police were recently dispatched to Tom Cruise's Beverly Hills home after someone reported an armed robbery but it appeared to have been a false alarm.

Cruise, who is currently filming the movie "All You Need Is Kill" in England, and his family members were not home at the time, police said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com.

"On Thursday, January 17, 2013, at approximately 11:51 a.m., the Beverly Hills Police Department received a 911 call in which the caller reported an armed robbery in progress at [Cruise's] residence,"the statement said. "Upon arrival, officers made contact with private security at the residence and conducted a search of the location."

"It was determined the residence belonged to actor Tom Cruise, and no emergency was discovered," the message added. "Neither Mr. Cruise nor his family were home when the emergency was reported. Beverly Hills Police Department Detectives will be investigating the incident as a crime due to the false report."

Cruise has a son and daughter from his marriage to Nicole Kidman, while his youngest child, daughter Suri, lives primarily in New York with her mother, his third ex-wife, Katie Holmes.

In October, one of Cruise's neighbors was tasered and arrested after trespassing on the actor's property. Police said he was intoxicated. The man was later released and no charges were filed.

In December, Los Angeles authorities arrested a "juvenile" suspected of reporting fake emergencies at the Los Angeles homes of actor Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber while they were away. It is unclear if Thursday's incident is related to either case.

Such false calls are often called "swatting" because it could spur the dispatching of a SWAT team. Such an act is a misdemeanor, although it would be classified as a felony if anyone is injured as a result of it.

Cruise's new film, "All You Need Is Kill," is due in 2014. The actor -- who, according to Forbes, was was the highest-paid actor of 2012 (see list), recently appeared in the action movie "Jack Reacher" and also filmed the sci-fi film "Oblivion." (watch trailer).
