Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher' is 'unlikely' to get a sequel

Tom Cruise's latest movie Jack Reacher is "unlikely" to get a sequel, say Hollywood insiders.

Based on a series of novels by British author Lee Child, Jack Reacher stars Cruise as a former military police officer turned vigilante who wanders across America as a drifter.

His casting has drawn criticism from some fans of the novels, who feel that Cruise lacks the stature and tough guy image to play Reacher. The character written by Child is said to stand at 6ft 5in tall and have a 50-inch chest.

Since opening last month (December 2012), Jack Reacher has taken $153m (95m) worldwide - enough to recoup its $60m (37m) production budget and marketing costs, but a pretty unremarkable total for a Christmas blockbuster.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures will only consider a sequel if Jack Reacher hits the $250m (155m) mark - a target it calls "challenging" but which "isn't out the question". To stand a chance, the film will have to do bumper business in the Far East, where it has yet to open.

Meanwhile, Cruise will ! next be seen in Oblivion, a sci-fi flick from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The film, which has a soundtrack by M83, is scheduled for release on April 12 this year (2013).
