Tom Cruise to become honorary citizen of Busan, South Korea
Tom Cruise is set to become an honorary citizen of Busan, South Korea at a ceremony that will be held on Thursday at the Busan Cinema Center.
Cruise is visiting Busan this week to promote Jack Reacher. The film's director, Christopher McQuarrie, and lead actress, Rosamund Pike, will also receive special citizenship certificates from Busan Mayor and Busan Film Festival chairman Hur Nam-sik, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"The visit of a top star and director will contribute to promoting Busan's important status in Asia for cinema. The city has decided to award the honorary citizenship to Mr. Cruise in recognition to his contribution to the industry," a city official said.
The Jack Reacher premiere will be the first red carpet premiere for a foreign movie held in Busan outside of the festival period.The city is the home of Korea's, as well as, Asia's largest annual film festival, the Busan Film Festival, and is gaining popularity as a production site for domestic and international films.
It also seems the residents of Busan aren't the only ones expressing their love of Cruise, reports The Huffington Post. South Korean rapper Psy had mentioned Cruise's name when asked who he'd like to see go "Gangnam Style."
Jack Reacher opens in Korean theaters on January 17.
