A new report in the US suggests that Tom Cruise's relationship with Penelope Cruz was ruined by his commitment to the Church of Scientology, with sources claiming it was a "third wheel" in the couple's relationship.

Penelope and Tom, who co-starred in 'Vanilla Sky' dated for three years following the 'Top Gun' star's divorce from Nicole Kidman in 2001, but split when the actress allegedly felt that Tom's dedication to the religion was coming between them.

Penelope pulled the plug on the relationship because she felt that the Church of Scientology was the third wheel in their relationship, a source told RadarOnline.

[She] doesn't have anything against the Church, but it just wasn't her thing. She admired Tom's dedication to it, but it wasn't her cup of tea and wasn't something she wanted to give her life up for.

If Tom hadn't been in the Church the 'Vicki, Christina, Barcelona' actress, who is now married to Javier Bardem, could have become the third 'Mrs Cruise' ahead of Katie Holmes, who Tom started dating in 2005.

The source explained that marriage and a future together was widely spoken off: "Tom had! absolutely planned on proposing to Penelope, and they had openly discussed marriage during the three years they were dating.

"[He] was head over heels in love with Penelope and could see them spending the rest of their lives together, and she felt the same way.

The speculation over Cruise's personal life comes as a Vanity Fair article accuses the star of 'auditioning' his perspective dates, giving details of the kind of woman he wanted to date to Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige.

A source claimed: "Tom had very specific demands about the type of woman he was interested in, including long dark hair, olive complexion and preferably an actress. Of course, he wanted her to preferably be a Scientologist too.

The allegations have been denied by Cruise's rep who brands the article and claims that the church was behind Tom and Penelope's split as, ridiculously false.
