Tom Cruise may have missed Suri's first day at school

Seeing your offspring off on their first day at school is a milestone many parents will remember for the rest of their lives.

But Tom Cruise was nowhere to be seen as his daughter Suri enrolled at the elite Avenues School in New York yesterday (Tuesday).

And today, the 50-year-old actor was spotted out and about in London, suggesting he may have missed the landmark event altogether.

Stepping out in the capital wearing a grey v-neck jumper and Aviator shades, the Rock of Ages star looked cool, calm and collected as he went about his day.

But unfortunately, little Suri didn't look so together as she arrived at her new school yesterday - perhaps missing the calming influence of her beloved daddy.

The six-year-old tot was pictured biting her nails as she rolled up to $39,750-a-year establishment in New York's Chelsea area with a pink bow in her hair.

And her mother Katie Holmes, 33, looked equally on edge ! in their chauffeur driven car, clearly experiencing the trepidation many parents feel when their child prepares to set off to the classroom.

The brand new Avenues School is situated just blocks away from the apartment Suri and her mother moved to in the wake of Katie's divorce from Tom.

Aimed at the children of the jetsetting elite, 'The World School' enables pupils to follow their parents around the globe without being tied to school vacation schedules.

A source recently told Life & Style magazine: 'Katie has eagerly been telling Suri all about the lunchrooms, basketball courts and different activities Avenues offers. Suri's really excited about it.'

The imposing school building features a rooftop playground, along with a main gym that includes full-size basketball and volleyball courts.

And with campuses planned for China, India, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australia Suri will certainly be able to study around the globe.

Tom was first spotted in London over the weekend, appearing to have dropped a few pounds from his usually buff frame.

The 50-year-old star looked a shadow of his former self and somewhat gaunt as he was spotted arriving at a production of William Shakespeare's Richard III at the Globe Theatre with a group of male pals.

Katie initially lodged legal papers in June, citing 'irreconcilable differences' as the reason behind the split and requesting sole legal custody and 'primary residential custody' of Suri - the couple's six-year-old daughter.

The former couple released a joint statement at the time, saying: 'We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests.

'We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents.'

The pair then officially divorced at the end of August.
