Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher' premiere postponed after Newtown tragedy

The US premiere of Tom Cruise's latest action movie Jack Reacher has been postponed after the tragedy at Newtown, Connecticut.

On Friday morning (December 14), suspect Adam Lanza killed his mother Nancy Lanza then went on a shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 children and six adults.

Lanza took his own life after the rampage at the school, at which his mother is believed to have once worked.

The death total of Friday's shooting stands at 28.

Paramount Pictures announced that it is postponing the premiere of Jack Reacher today following the shooting.

"Due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and out of honour and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow's Pittsburgh premiere of Jack Reacher," the studio said in a statement.

"Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones."

Jack Reacher arrives in cinemas on December 21 in the US and December 26 in the UK.
