Is there hope for TomKat? Tom Cruise ready to cut links with Scientology to win back Katie Holmes

When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes marriage fell apart earlier this year, the actors obsession with Scientologywas blamed.

It emerged Katie, 33, feared their six-year-old daughter Suri would become too involved in the religion.

But, in an astonishing move, Tom is thought to be reconsidering his links to Scientology after 20 years with the church.

Sources close to the star claim if he cuts his ties he may even win back former Dawsons Creek actress Katie and see more of his daughter.

The source close to the three-times divorced Top Gun star said: Now hes lost the most precious thing in his life, he sees that his Scientology beliefs may not have hurt his box office but have ended not one but two marriages.

It was a terrifying and rude awakening for Tom when Katie served him with divorce papers. Hes used to feeling undefeatable and untouchable. When he lost Katie he felt a failure.

Tom became a Scientologist in 1990 when he was married to his first wife, Mimi Rogers, 56.

The end of his second marriage to actress Nicole Kidman, 45, was also blamed on the religion.

The friend said: He has lost Nicole and now his wife and daughter. He has always used the Scientology techniques but he has now realised they dont work in marriage.

Cruises close friendship with David Miscavige, the leader of the church, has also suffered.

The pal said: Tom and David have been attached at the hip but this relationship has deteriorated and that, along with the loss of Katie and Suri, is forcing him to question his role in the church.

He hasnt lost faith completely but he is blaming Scientology for whathas happened.

Tom and Katie, nicknamed TomKat, seemed the perfect Hollywood family until the actress served divorce papers on her husband by fax in June.

In August they were officiallydivorced by a New York judge after six years of marriage. Katie cited irreconcilable differences for the split and requested sole legal custody and primary residential care! of Suri..

A pre-nup agreement entitled her to $3million (1.9million) for each year they had been married to a maximum of $33million (20.5million) after 11 years, as well as a substantial amount of property that Cruise owns. Tom also gives Katie $400,000 (250,000) a year for Suris medical and dental insurance, plus education fees and other extracurricular expenses.

Following the split Cruise has spent most of his time filming his new action movie Oblivion at various locations across Europe. Meanwhile Suri has been photographed in New York with Katie eating ice cream, something he reportedly banned her from doing.

It had been assumed Tom would immerse himself in the religion but a source within the organisation whose global headquarters are in East Grinstead, West Sussex claims Tom no longer wants to be the face of Scientology. Along with A-list stars such as John Travolta and Kirstie Alley, Cruise is one the religions most high-profile members. But hes now trying to reduce his involvement with publicising the beliefs.

The source said: Tom is no longer volunteering to be the public poster boy for Scientology. Youll see he is seriously calming that down, he will head up the annual fundraisers and awards show but thats in-house.

In the outside world, Tom will not be promoting the religion, he is distancing himself.

Many believe he is pulling away because he thinks it was Scientology that split him and Katie up. The break down of his friendship with Miscavige is just as crucial in his decision to distance himself from the church.

David, 52, has been involved in the religion since he was just 11 and was an assistant to its founderL. Ron Hubbard. Miscavige announced Hubbards death in 1986.

Until his split from Katie, Cruise was said to worship David like a God and their intense friendship has been blamed by some as the reason for TomKats marriage ending.

Miscavige, Toms best man when he wed Katie near Rome, has been mocked as Toms manwife. They have been! seen wear! ing matching black silk shirts and have often given each other expensive gifts. On one occasion David bought Tom an aircraft hangar for his private jet.

But today sources within Scientology said Tom hasnt been seen at the services or Sunday brunch in months. The source said he has told friends if he were no longer a Scientologist he and Katie could live happily ever after.

He is understood to be using go-betweens to tip her off that he is disillusioned with his faith.

The source said: If Tom truly leaves, Katie would reconsider. She was in love with Tom, he was her childhood crush, it took a lot of strength to break free. But now she has peace of mind but no love.

She may have Suri at her side and her mum Kathleen and dad Martin living nearby but her friends say she is growing fed up with the less glamorous lifestyle she now leads.

One said: She had it all before, and now shes alone in what she sees as rainy, dreary Manhattan with very little to do.

She did get involved in the recent New York fashion week but found it gruelling and she has lost so much of the support she once had.
