Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' marriage was reportedly "over" six months before they eventually split in June this year.

The couple, who were married for five years, went their separate ways just four days before the 'Mission Impossible' star turned 50, but according to court papers the marriage was over long before that, RadarOnline reports.

Court papers pertaining to the divorce, according to the National Enquirer, dated and August 17 2012 and signed by a New York Supreme Court Judge reveal details of the couple's divorce decree and the custody agreement for their only child Suri.

In the papers the "marital relationship" reportedly had "broken down irretrievably for a period of at least six months immediately preceding."

The couple were last spotted together in May just a few weeks before the split was announced with no signs the marriage was "over". During a visit to Iceland where Tom was shooting a movie, the couple were spotted walking hand in hand with no hint of a split.

Katie was reported to have been issued primary custody of their six year old, with Tom paying $400,00 a year to cover, medical, dental, insurance, unreimbursed medical and dental, education, college, extracurricular and camp expenses.

Since the split Suri and Katie have moved into a modest apartment in New York, with the youngster starting school for the very first time at the exclusive Avenues in Manhattan. Cruise claimed he was deeply saddened when he found out the Dawson's Creek star filed for divorce.

They tied the knot in a lavish wedding in Italy in 2006, though the court documents claim they officially married in a civil ceremony in Los Angeles on November 11, a week before. The couple agreed details of their divorce in private through their legal teams within 14 days of the court papers being filed in New York by Katie, preventing details being made public if the proceedings went to court.

At the time they released a joint statement claiming the welfare of their daughter was their primary concern.

The statement said: We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suris best interests.

"We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each others commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each others roles as parents."
